The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty was celebrated in Kielce. The homeless, representatives of the city authorities, employees of the City Center for Family and Social Welfare, and volunteers paid homage to the victims of poverty worldwide. Participants of the meeting for the 30th anniversary visited the places devoted to the poor - the Human Rights and the Homeless Cross near the railway station building. The annual meeting is organized, among others. by the International ATD Movement, founded by Father Józef Wrzesiński.

The celebration of the Day to Overcome Poverty aims to make the public aware of the need to eradicate poverty in the world, and especially in developing countries. The poor are people with difficult stories that make it hard to cope with.

The presence of many people during the celebration indicates that the problem of poverty is present in our region, but also shows that the fate of needy people is not indifferent to us.

After a common prayer before the cross, where the plates with the names of deceased homeless people are being piled, the participants went to the shelter for the needy in Sienna Street. There were talks about activities in Poland and in the world.

The commemoration started with UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, delivering a video message for the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
Participation of people living in poverty has been at the center of the Day's celebration since its very beginning. This year, delegates coming from all over the world shared their experience, intelligence and struggles to keep their families together, to strive to overcome the obstacles, no matter what, and, to face the shame and humiliation related to discrimination and stigmatization.
They shared how, despite all odds, they still do their best to lead a life in dignity, for themselves and their communities.

Mr. Seamus Neville "Everywhere in the world, extreme poverty separates children from their parents"

Alex Begay "We are struggling to live up to our hopes, hoping for peace."

Ms. Angélique Jeanne "Enough is enough. We are not to be blamed. We are people who resist and who want to build peace.”

Mr. Mahamadou Kone "Seeking our essence as human beings is not a personal quest but a collective one. Our humanity rises from a common base, a common dignity."

Mr. Adrien Delva "There is no risk in fighting extreme poverty, we just have to reach out to others to build peace. And all of us will benefit."

The voices and experiences were heard by the Ambassador of France, François Delattre, and the Ambassador of Burkina Faso to the United Nations, Yemdaogo Eric Tiare, as well as by UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner. All reacted to these messages of struggles and hopes transcending borders and nationalities.

The sense of solidarity and togetherness, between people from different social backgrounds, was a rare and unique achievement on this special day. Donald Lee, President of the International Commitee for October 17, and Isabelle Pypaert-Perrin, Director General of the International Movement ATD Fourth World, also shared their message of support and solidarity with those furthest behind.

This year, the commemoration ended with a time of reflection around the Commemorative Stone in Honor of the Victims of Extreme Poverty located on the North Lawn of the UN Gardens. Here again, unity and solidarity were expressed through speeches from UN officials, the Ambassador of France and delegates with lived experience of poverty. Young people and children read the Call to Action of the Commemorative Stone in the six official languages of the United Nations.

Symbolizing our personal commitment, a gesture was performed at the Commemorative Stone where we invited the audience to pick a smaller stone, with “Stop Poverty, October 17, 2017” written on it. This acted as a reminder of our contribution and commitment to a create a society, where everyone’s voice and place will be recognized and valued equally.

The Ambassador of France to the UN, François Delattre, was also present at the Commemorative Stone, a gift offered by France to the United Nations in 1996. Taking his time to actively listen to people living in poverty, he reaffirmed his solidarity with those left furthest behind. As did Daniela Bas, Director of the Division for Social Policy and Development of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) .

Martine Le Corre, Deputy Director General of the International Movement of ATD Fourth World, reminded how unacceptable it is that poverty destroys so many lives of men, women, and children. Yet she also highlighted the fact that people living in poverty are fighting each day to get out of their situation and to create peace around them and how each of one of us could take action to support them in their fight. "Together we make this solemn commitment around this stone. Together, we are determined; we will not give up."
